Guide to tyre pressures

Tyres being your only contact point between terrain and truck determines how easy or hard your off-roading will be. Playing with different tyre pressures represents the cheapest mods you can do to your truck to change the way it behaves in an environment. Simple mod tip – If stuck, reduce your tyre pressures and try again (no less than 15psi if not beadlocked). Here is a simple tyre pressure guide:   Note that reducing tyre pressure is better for the environment as well as your traction. This is because you’ll…

South Island dreaming

For a good few years now, I have wanted to drive the Molesworth Station and Rainbow Station Roads and my partner, Paula, has wanted to hike some tracks in the Wanaka area… So, we finally started planning a two week trip south to the mainland. After a whole lot of planning, the time came to pack the Nissan Patrol and get on the road. We left Taupo, stayed one night in Wellington and had the 8:00am ferry accompanied by a pod of dolphins on the way out of Wellington Harbour.…

Our version of ‘Go Bush’ with the Manukau 4×4 Club

Club Trip – Our version of ‘Go Bush’ – Saturday 9th Dec Note from the Trip leader was: Due to the winter rains and flooding a year ago, there is new access to the property, so don’t be a smart arse thinking you can catch up if you are late. You won’t. If anyone has a chainsaw, bring it, please. This mention of chainsaws required was foreboding, and if we hadn’t brought them we’d still be in there! We at least brought two chainsaws, two machetes, two spades and one pickaxe…

Amazing Ahipara

Another Nz4wheelers trip: As Queen’s birthday arrived and we officially clicked over into the Winter season, colder southerly winds and frequent showers as expected make getting a group of people together to go overlanding somewhat more challenging. Having done Pouto four/five times already, we were keen do something different and after watching a video from NZ 4WD and the Kaitaia 4×4 club heading through the Gumfields track in Ahipara, it was an easy choice and our destination was chosen. A smaller than usual group of three trucks left Auckland mid-day…

Pouto #5 “Un-Finished Business”

If you haven’t visited Pouto, it should be on your to do list, we are regular visitors to Pouto and still can’t get enough of it. This trip started off a lot less dramatic than the last one, not having to put out a fire under the hood on the side of the road goes along way to starting off the weekend relaxed. Taming the Serpentine

On almost everyone’s to do list is the rough ridge mountains Serpentine 25km track off the Old Dunstan Road. This track leads into a well preserved historical mining area, deep in central Otago. This track is not maintained by the Central Otago District council and is currently in poor condition. The CODC advises extreme caution. You require good 4wd conditions to access this track and it pays to check local information and weather conditions first before attempting it. It features several water crossings and some challenging sections, best to travel…

Pouto Trip #4 ‘Mayhem’ Report

While some of the group traveled up to Dargaville on the Friday night, a number of us met at the BP service center just out of Silverdale on Saturday morning and set off just before 7am. 45 minutes into our journey there was a call over the radio that one of the trucks was blowing turbo smoke, this normally wouldn’t raise too much concern, only…
